The Mk 1s were very
much an experiment. I needed an interesting pair of speakers to add to complete a
hifi to use as my end of a swap. Most people really liked the shape and they do play
music.
The next set are for
my Mom (radio, tape, but mostly TV). When i move her up to 5.1 these should make
good surrounds. Revisions planned for this set:
- A longer tube -- the
length of the Mk 1s was compromised while i was figuring out how to cut the PVC pipe
accurately enuff.
- Less resistriction
at the terminus
- A deeper insert into
the pipe at the top -- The 1/4" i have in the Mk 1s i learned was too little
as i glued the top back onto one of them a 2nd time.
- A wider base with
a shape more in harmony with the rounded shape of the toob
- The copper tubes used
for legs need to be inset more to accomodate the elastic on the socks
- I won't puzzle coat
the dust cap (i'd like to remove it, but there are issues with dust)
- Tweaks on the tailoring
of the socks.
- I may finish them
with a wood veneer (i have some 1/8" fir -- it would match her hardwood floor)
and just have a cap over the baffle instead of a sock over the whole thing.
There are other ways
to tackle the implentation of some of the construction of this speaker. Here are
some i have thot of:
- The bottom plate on
the Mk1s main purpose is to provide a place to attach the legs/stand (althou it provides
a clamping function on the bottom of the tube changing its internal resonances).
One could add legs that attach to the outside of the tube -- i'm imagining a three-legged
Buck Rogers rocketship kind of thing. Or drill holes and hang them from the ceiling.
Let your imagination go wild.
- Instead of rounding
the top plate & rebating the midwoofer, the front of the baffle could be built-up
with contoured layers of felt (you need something to keep the grill off the midbass)
I am also going to
be using some 8 and 10" pipe to make some bass toobz (Nick's Tubular TLs are the inspiration) with push-push
8" drivers.
